Working with Affairs: Simplifying the Heart of AIRM

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will discuss how affairs and other attachment injuries are frequently the presenting concerns when couples present to therapy. Thus, every EFT therapist must become proficient at dealing with these issues. We will explore the AIRM model, with an eye towards simplification and application. The presenter will consolidate the ideas of several EFT experts to deepen your understanding and demystify the AIRM. By the end of this webinar participants will be able to conceptualize how AIRM is simply a focused way of doing EFT. Participants will also leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to address attachment injuries, including affairs, within EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

From Withdraw to Reach: Navigating Shame in the EFT Process

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore how each partner's moves in the cycle have typically been developed to guard against the exposure of shame. Accordingly, we need to develop methods to notice and close-validate shame that occurs in Stage 1 during couples therapy. Once the safety of de-escalation has been achieved, we need to access primary emotions as a way to explore negative view of self, with an expectation that shame often lies at the core of this negative view of self. The presenter will stress that the apex of EFT, the Step 7 "reach", mostly involves the sharing of shame and will discuss ways this can be navigated within couples therapy. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of how to navigate shame within EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training program.

What EFT Stage Are We Even In?!

One of the questions clinicians frequently ask EFT Supervisors is, "Is this couple in Stage 1 or Stage 2 of EFT?". Understanding what differentiates Stage 1 from Stage 2 work and how to progress couples through the stages is essential for effective EFT. In this webinar, we will explore how Stage 1 is focused on the cycle in order to obtain de-escalation, whereas Stage 2 is focused on the self and marked by free-flowing exploration. Relatedly, the presenter will discuss how to identify a variety of de-escalation markers, which signal the end of Stage 1. The presenter will also discuss the primacy of self-exploration, which marks the entrance into Stage 2. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of Stages 1 and 2 in EFT couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Internal World and Behavioral Moves of Withdrawers

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore what EFT trainer Kathryn Rheem meant by the statement, "withdrawers seem to have the steeper road to walk in EFT." With the exception of their primary relationship, the withdrawer's world frequently looks pretty good: They achieve a lot, tend to be successful, and frequently have a positive view of self. At the same time, interpersonal closeness is often uncomfortable for withdrawers. The presenter will explore the behavioral moves of withdrawers in the cycle with a focus on how the therapist needs to present themselves during the session to create a space where the withdrawer can experience success sharing their thoughts and feelings. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of withdrawers in couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Internal World and Behavioral Moves of Pursuers

ASSESSMENT AND THERAPY ASSOCIATES OF GRAND FORKS

Live, interactive webinar (via Zoom). Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is an evidence-based approach to couples therapy with strong evidence indicating that it significantly improves relationship satisfaction and reduces conflict for couples (Beasley & Ager, 2019). At the same time, there are numerous nuances to learn when practicing effective EFT with couples. In this webinar, we will explore the value of the pursuer's anger. The presenter will also share ways to lean into the anger with acceptance and understanding, rather than pulling away in frustration and fear. We will learn how to reframe anger a pursuer experiences in more hopeful ways (e.g., "Increased energy" that is fighting for their relationship, representing their hope). The presenter will discuss how reflection that the therapist understands their central dilemma (i.e., pushing for change does not work, and doing nothing is not an option) is central to successful work with pursuers in couples therapy. We will also explore how most pursuers have a very harsh inner critic and how to help them navigate this. Participants will leave this webinar with a better understanding of pursuers in couples therapy. This is an intermediate-level webinar that is appropriate for licensed mental health professionals and students in mental health graduate training programs.

Examples of dual relationships include when the client is also a student, friend, family member, employee, or business associate of the therapist. Boundary crossings and violations may occur in situations where dual relationships exist. While boundary crossings may be unavoidable and harmless in certain situations, such as when the clinician and client both live in a small community and see each other away from the therapeutic setting, boundary violations are those that are harmful and exploitative.

Promoting Inclusivity in Mental Health Practice

MINDFUL

Inclusivity in mental health practice refers to the intentional and proactive efforts made by mental health professionals to create an environment that is welcoming, respectful, and responsive to the diverse needs of all individuals seeking mental health support. This approach recognizes and values differences in race, ethnicity, culture, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, ability, and other aspects of identity. Mental health practitioners must promote inclusivity in mental health practice because inclusivity aligns with ethical principles, ensuring that mental health services are accessible, equitable, and respectful to all individuals, regardless of their background or identity. Inclusivity is crucial for building trust and rapport between mental health practitioners and clients, as individuals are more likely to engage openly in therapy when they feel understood, respected, accepted, and valued.
