Human trafficking can involve both labor and sexual exploitation and can affect individuals of any age, gender, race, ethnicity, nationality, immigration status, or sexual orientation. Victims and survivors of human trafficking are often encountered in medical settings such as local clinics and emergency departments. The actions taken by healthcare teams can have a significant impact on these individuals. The training, "Human Trafficking for Texas Health Professionals," provides various resources to help healthcare professionals become informed and prepared to address this critical issue effectively.

Recognizing Human Trafficking and Reporting Guidelines

INSTITUTE FOR NATURAL RESOURCES

Human trafficking knows no limits and this predatory crime plagues rural, suburban and urban communities in the United States and throughout the world. The inhumane, cruel devastation wrought by traffickers pardons no age, gender, ethnicity, race or socioeconomic status. Traffickers deprive their victims of their identity, self-worth, autonomy, liberty, freedom and justice through force, fear, intimidation and false promises. This continuing education activity will review the indicators of human trafficking, community stakeholders, and their roles in combating human trafficking will be discussed along with resources to care and support victims of human trafficking. Further, Renee Mallett, healthcare attorney, will discuss the legal implications for both the victim and trafficker and how healthcare professionals may aid in the legal proceedings.

Human Trafficking: Clinical Recognition, Documentation, and Intervention

ACHIEVE CE - EDUCATION SERVICES

This training equips healthcare providers to bridge the identification gap by transitioning from clinical intuition to an evidence-based assessment framework. Participants analyze the Action, Means, Purpose (AMP) model to differentiate trafficking from smuggling and review how reporting duties, documentation practices, and institutional response requirements may vary by state. The curriculum focuses on multifaceted screening tools, safe-separation protocols, and forensic documentation using ICD-10-CM coding. By evaluating systemic vulnerabilities and ethical tensions between autonomy and mandatory reporting, this course prepares practitioners to respond to suspected trafficking in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered, and legally aware manner. A significant practice gap exists in healthcare settings where clinicians miss many trafficking victims because assessment methods are inconsistent and often rely too heavily on unstructured judgment. While many providers recognize general red flags, specialized skills for safe separation, trauma-informed interviewing, objective documentation, and identifying markers of coercive control remain underutilized. In addition, state laws and facility requirements regarding reporting, signage, staff protections, and referral pathways may change over time and differ by jurisdiction. This course addresses these gaps by linking clinical evidence with practical response strategies, enabling providers to document suspected exploitation accurately, respect patient autonomy when legally appropriate, and respond in a manner that aligns with applicable state law and facility policy.

Human Trafficking in the Pharmacy Setting: Defining Our Role

ACHIEVE CE - EDUCATION SERVICES

Human trafficking is the fastest-growing criminal industry in the world and is growing exponentially in the United States. Unfortunately, the profession of pharmacy has lagged behind other healthcare professions in providing education, training, and resources to pharmacists in the areas of victim identification and assistance. This is particularly interesting because limited research shows that pharmacists are situated in an integral position to identify and communicate with victims while still in captivity. Only a limited number of states require continuing education for licensed pharmacists and there is little to no training for pharmacy students, pharmacists, or technicians. This activity includes information on the global human trafficking crisis in the United States and how it relates to pharmacy in particular. It aims to educate pharmacy professionals on the types of human trafficking, identification of potential victims, and how to safely intervene or report to appropriate authorities.
