Preventing Targeted Violence by Adolescents & Adults

FATSA- FLORIDA ASSOCIATION FOR THE TREAT

Abstract: The U.S. has witnessed an unprecedented rise in targeted violence, or planned attacks, involving schools, businesses, government institutions, and faith centers, leaving many to question how to prevent such tragedies. Research studying averted and perpetrated attacks has revealed key findings about attackers, including that many individuals had contact with the legal and mental health systems beforehand. This key finding highlights why clinicians, case managers, supervision officers, and judicial officials need to be aware of potential attack warning signs, as they are integral to preventing such violence. This presentation will review insights about attackers, the planning that precedes such violence, indicators suggesting an imminent attack, and ways to thwart such violence. Attendees will learn about the most common psychological issues exhibited by attackers as well as the frequently cited motivations for perpetrators. With such information, attendees will be better equipped to prevent this nationwide epidemic. Learning goals: Attendees will: 1. Be introduced to behavioral threat assessment management (BTAM) 2. Identify risk factors associated with school & workplace attacks 3. Indicators suggesting an imminent attack Speakers: Kim Spence, PhD Alex Rodrigues, PsyD

The Fire Extinguisher Technique - A Innovative Model of Relapse Prevention

AFFORDABLE CEUS BY SUSAN MCMILLAN - FLORIDA CONTINUING EDUCATION LLC

The Fire Extinguisher is a revolutionary model of relapse prevention for addiction and compulsive disorders which uses the patient's own positive and negative motivations associated with their actual pleasurable and painful experiences to make their recovery decisions. This model utilizes neurolinguistic programming (NPL) and hypnotic suggestions to reinforce its effectiveness. By subconsciously activating the client's intrinsic motivation to avoid painful and negative consequences, the probability that the client will remember and use the technique is greatly enhanced. The Fire Extinguisher model has already helped hundreds of patients to avoid relapse and protect their fragile and sometimes tenuous commitment to abstinence. With the fire extinguisher tool in their mind and in their pocket, clients have a fighting chance to put out the fire when the flames get higher.

Managing Obesity to Improve Health: New Drugs, Old Drugs

ACHIEVE CE - EDUCATION SERVICES

Obesity continues to increase in prevalence nationwide, resulting in the worsening of other disease states, such as heart failure, diabetes, and cardiovascular events. Studies have shown that weight reduction can lead to fewer cardiovascular events and decrease the risk of complications associated with co-morbid conditions. Over the past 3 years, there has been progress in the use of medications for assisting patients in losing weight. However, the guidelines have lagged in adding these agents and where they may fit in therapy. Because of this, there are many healthcare professionals that do not realize the options for weight loss, when to utilize them, and most importantly, how they should be used as an adjunct to non-pharmacologic management strategies. This activity reviews all the pharmacologic options in the US market that aid patients in losing weight. It will discuss where medications may fit in therapy, who would benefit from each medication based on a patient-centered care approach. It will also discuss the risks associated with the use. In addition, non-pharmacologic options and their roles in a holistic care plan for weight loss will be included.
